Soul Work – are you doing it?

My students say that I am harsh. That I don’t see the best in people. That I’d catch more flies with honey…

Yeah, I know. Flies love honey… but I am looking to talk to people who aspire to go to the next level of human evolution, and those people are not flies. They are not scared away by reality: they know it will take taking a hard look at reality that is not pretty…

I am a realist. Rob Brezsny is an optimist… he has a lot of honey… yet, a realist finds the work in what he says, and loves it.

Rob Breszny writes: While walking in San Francisco, I passed the Pacific Heights Health Club. The sign out front said, “Birthday suits tailored here.” It was a witty reference to the idea that working out at a gym helps people get their naked bodies in good shape. I’d like to interpret the sign’s message in a different way, and apply it to you. The time is right for you to get back in touch with your raw, original self, and give it the care and the fuel and the treats it has been missing. Who did you start out to be? What does your soul’s blueprint say about who you must become? Home in on your source code and boost its signal.

Life’s real purpose is self-actualization

Self-actualization is the process of becoming all you can become.
Who is to argue that ultimately that is what we all need. Innately!

There are two non-physical needs, according to Margoczi in the Feelings book.

The need to fulfill others’ expectations of us, and
the need to fulfill our own expectations of ourselves. Ultimately, optimally, what we can do… the realistic expectations.

Are questions a good way to make you think? More questions…

Here are even more questions you can ask of yourself…

This is the third article in this series, and No feedback, so far, so I assume you just read the questions and answered the way you answer everything, without looking…

Do I listen to others?
What do they have to say about that?
Am I listening to how what they say fit?
Am I listening to what they are up to this time?
Am I listening if I agree or not?
Am I really listening or just waiting for them to finish so I can speak?
Do I only talk to people to give them a piece of my mind or to tell them what to do? If so, do I listen for the echo while I talk to them?
Do I know if what I said was heard or not?
Do I pray only when I want something?
Do I see people only when I need or want something?
Do I think only of myself?
Do I think of prayer as a food order at McDonald’s?
Do I procrastinate? Or just putting off things?
Do things pile up around me? Dreams, plans, aspirations… in a pile of broken dreams?

How to build a life worth living, if yours is not like that

Today I got struck with an insight.

I have written 613 articles on building, that is roughly 10% of all my articles, and yet I have noticed that building didn’t, hasn’t become part of the vocabulary of clients and readers of my articles.

Why is that?

I am not sure, but I think that it is a mindset issue.

Unhappy? Bored? So-so? Read this article…

Drifting? Aimless? Unhappy? Bored? So-so? Read this article…

I just watched two book reviews of the same book, Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt. Why? Because I wanted to get the gist of it, without having to chew 300 pages plus.

But I am still interested to hear the principles, in 10 minutes instead of 10 hours… wouldn’t you?

The two reviews differed vastly, because of the reviewers.

Their IQ being the same, I looked at their vibration, and the difference was there… 20 points difference.

Vibration, in one way to look at, is the height from where you look at life.

The first guy looked at the book from a height from where you can see the principles, and can allow yourself to be guided by them. That is the usefulness of principles.

Do you have a friend you can discuss things with?

Occasionally I am struck with the sense that I have no one to talk to.

Some things, like should I do this, should I say yes or no, would be great for me to talk through.

Choice is: selecting freely, after consideration. Choice is when it is not your reasons that choose but you, yourself. But often it is not easy to choose… and a conversation helps.

Choice is selecting freely, after consideration…

That consideration is a conversation. Either with yourself, or with someone who is willing to be a sounding board.
Most people are not suitable to be a sounding board.
They either think that their ‘job’ is to fix your problems, or they want to sound smart, or they want to use you to talk about their stuff, or they are just… simply… not interested. Mostly in anything.

Also, if they are there in body but not in mind, they are not a sounding board.
The essence of a sounding board is the echo.

When the echo is distorted, the person had an opinion.
When there is no echo, the person wasn’t listening, they are off in their own thoughts.

If you are the subscriber of my podcasts, you’ll notice how many times I ask: are you there?
What is taking you out of the conversation if you are the listener?
In my experience, it is your overemphasis on yourself. Me, myself, and I. An about-me number higher than 30% makes you a very poor listener. And it forces the speaker, your conversation partner to change what they do, and have the conversation all about you.

That makes for a very poor podcast. One time, yes. Every time: it is boring for the listener.

For me: the experience of being sucked dry, giving me nothing in return.

I had a conversation partner for 14 years. It was perfect for 13 of those 14 years. Then during the pandemic, my partner fell in with the conspiracy theories. He started to view me as part of the liberal pedophile gang… I would laugh if it were funny. In the end we parted ways.
I miss talking to him.
I could discuss anything with him: he would provide the sounding board, and a few grunts here and there… And I would feel no need for another friend.

I probably didn’t give anything to him… I don’t even know if he had a need to be heard… It wasn’t a real friendship.
Real friendships are formed on the mutual need to be heard.
That doesn’t mean you have permission to be boring…

If you don’t have much to say, don’t talk. Be interested. And then if and when you have something to discuss, you can be heard.

You can be responsible for how you are heard. In essence, it is one of those ‘yours to do’ to be interesting or if you can’t… then be interested.

My friend wasn’t interesting. But for 13 of those 14 years he was interested. And I thrived on that interest.

I am normally the interesting party…

Like me, you can become playful, you can become entertaining, so they can actually stay with you, instead of going away into their own thoughts.

But you need to watch, like a hawk,

What do you want, really? or asked differently What do you really want?

The answer is in the values you choose to love…

I have been harping on values… and it is as if I were speaking in an auditorium where my voice doesn’t, can’t carry… there is no echo.

Nothing and no one indicating that they are hearing me, that they are pondering, that the question is heard and taken on as a quest to answer, to ponder, to be taken with you to sleep, to your meditation, to your walks, so you eventually come up with something you value.
Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

Community cannot for long feed on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown and undiscovered brothers.

During times of war, hatred becomes quite respectable even though it has to masquerade often under the guise of patriotism.

– Howard Thurman (1900 – 1981)

There are two kinds of values, temporary/transitory and eternal.

What is the difference between identity and Self? Do you have a Self?

Let’s talk about identification a little more… the identification that gives you the illusion that you are a person, but in fact it what is standing between you and becoming a person.

So what is a person? A person is someone who has a consciousness, a Self, that guides their actions, their relationship to life. When you ask: who is he? show is she? what comes up is not what they do for a living, what awards they won, how well or poorly they do their job… but something deeper and constant… They are that everywhere, on the job, in the public, in the bedroom… everywhere.

If you identify yourself with stuff on the periphery of your being, on the horizontal plane, what you say about yourself, what you want people to know is that you have won an Emmy, three time…

Or that you have had HIV for twenty years going
Or that you are gay
Or that you are black

And alas, it leaves you with no Self. The stuff you identify with has no consciousness, and have no defining power on your character.
Let’s do a little quiz: Which of these people/characters have a self?

Come from your strengths… Know Thyself… they say… But there are two approaches to self-actualization with dramatically different outcomes

Self-actualization is the process of becoming all you can become.

Who is to argue that ultimately that is what we all need!
Or if we want to go deeper, that need to self-actualization aka BEING is our soul’s desire… while our ego wants to own, to have and to control the environment, others.
So soul wants you to be… happy, fulfilled, vibrant… and the ego suggests that the path to happiness etc. leads through possession, aka control.
The nature of reality is that everything comes from a root cause… and that is being….
