Meditation: What is it and why is it useful?

Meditation

I wrote this article a year and a half ago. I never published it, but I will, now. Why? Because I have a lot more insight about meditation I can share, and because I offered a famous marketer to teach him meditation, and he hasn’t even bothered to answer my email.

I write many of my articles as a way to poke the Universe for answers, as a way to force my intelligence into gear.

What is meditation and what is the role of meditation?
Quoting from Wikipedia: Meditation is a practice in which an individual trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or as an end in itself
I will examine this question as a non-meditator who has tried to meditate and failed.

I am not against meditation. Meditation as a tool, to allow all knowledge to reach you, past the noise of all there is, distinguished as knowledge beyond your own, is invaluable.

I have been quasi meditating the past day or so… the questions I am meditating over are

1. whether God is a sentient being
2. whether the “law” of attraction, the law that says that you can earn something coming to you

More Victor Frankl Videos

Clips from the Victor Frankl Archives
To most people Viktor Frankl is known as author of “Man’s Search for Meaning” and the founder of Logotherapy. But beyond these two aspects of his person and life, Frankl was also known as a philosopher, thinker and close observer of behavior of individuals and behaviors and trends of society. He did not refrain from commenting on problems of larger scale and contexts outside the field of psychotherapy. Some called him a “wise old man”, some critizised him. His precise perception allowed him to spot problems concerning modern day society and he felt obliged to comment on them, as they often formed the fertile ground on which many neuroses would blossom. On this webpage you can experience a variety of original comments Frankl made throughout the years on TV and in lecture halls. Enjoy…

NEW THEORY … approx. 1963 [2:08]
TV interview on one of Frankl’s early lecture tours in the USA.

RESOURCES OF SURVIVAL, 1987 [3:57]
Lecture, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX. Frankl on ideas and ideals, depth- and “height-psychology”. Here is his much cited closing statement in which he reminds the American audience of the close ties between freedom and responsibility…

JERRY LONG: “I BROKE MY NECK, BUT IT DID NOT BREAK ME” [6:55]
One of the rare appearances of Frankl together with Jerry Long. Mr. Long, paralysed from neck down after a diving accident at age 17, wrote to Dr. Frankl the lines “I broke my neck, but it did not break me.” Long became a psychologist despite his severe handicap. He died in 2004.

ON EXISTENTIAL PHILOSOPHY [2:40]
Frankl discusses the differences between logotherapy and the views of french existentialists Sartre and Camus.

DRUGS: SUBJECTIVE VS. OBJECTIVE MEANING [4:28]
One of Frankls main topics in the 1960s. When teaching at Harvard University in 1961, he was among few who opposed the experimental use of LSD proposed by Dr. Timothy Leary, stating that “freedom is only one side of a phenomenon whose other side is responsibility”. (California 1968)

ON BELIEF AFTER THE HOLOCAUST [3:31]
Can one believe in god after Ausschwitz? Frankl´s view differed from that of many within his religious community, often sparking emotions and controversy. An rare recording, where he points out his position very clearl

Your cone of vision

What does cone of vision have to do with anything?
Unfortunately for homo sapiens it has to do with everything.

If you can only see strictly what is inside your focus, you are vulnerable, because what you are not seeing can kill you, steal your lunch, or as in projects, life, business, won’t be taken care of.

If your about-me score is high, i.e. your humility is low, inside the small circle of your narrow cone of vision, you will have a hard time to see anything other than your self-concern, your mind-knowledge… virtually nothing of reality… so you are as good as dead.

It takes conscious effort to open your cone of vision and see wider and see deeper. And as long as you don’t… because you don’t even know that there is something to see, your effectiveness in life is going to be low.

This topic comes up in many of my articles… go here to read some

The most significant accomplishment of the 20th Century: muscle testing

I think the biggest and most significant accomplishment of the the 20th Century was distinguishing that you can muscle testing.

The original idea of that, which they called muscle testing, was that the body knows what’s true and what’s not. Unfortunately, the body what’s good for it, but not exactly the way muscle testing has been using and abusing it.

Thousands of charlatans suddenly had a proof that they know what they are talking about, and they could sell the wares of other charlatans, all kinds of gizmos, devices, supplements, spiritual hocus-pocus… you know what I am talking about. If you don’t: you are probably one of those charlatans.

I am not saying that some issues could not be decided based on the body’s response: most definitely yes. Chiropractors were the first to use it successfully and ethically, only to bastardize it to sell supplements: you make more money selling supplements than doing chiropractic: the chiropractic brings them in, but you get paid for much more than what you do by the supplement manufacturers. As much as 50% commission.

I have heard that the shipping and handling you pay, also pays for the bottles and their contents: 90% profit margin? WTF!

And yet, I say that muscle testing, or the idea that you can ask a higher authority and use the yes/no answer of the body to get guidance, was revolutionary.

The saga continues: Landmark Education and me… and proof that positive thinking is bah humbug

I left it off where by 4 pm the day of my return from my first Landmark course, four people at the City of Jerusalem office registered into a course, because they wanted what I got. I went from misery to pride, a vibration of 35 to 175 during that weekend, or more specifically in that 15 minute exercise where I had the insight that I blamed my father for not marrying me.

And no, the issue wasn’t whether I can marry another or not… though it has come up as a question later, much later. The issue was the anger that was tied up in that incident, in that blame, and also the self-disgust of having been used. Being used is still a sore spot for me, but I don’t try to punish everyone for my own misery any more. I did, for many many decades.

As in every Landmark course, there was a Tuesday night evening session. Trekking to Haifa was not on my schedule, but given the result I got, I decided to go. People shared what they got out of the course, and I didn’t understand half of it. I didn’t share. I didn’t know what I got out of it, other than people didn’t leave the bathroom like before. Although it was significant, I could not explain what happened.

I didn’t know about energy, I didn’t know about vibration, I didn’t know about anything that would explain why that happened. Don’t forget, 175 is still a low vibration: still below where you can consider yourself a human being in training. Life is still all about you at 175.

My saga with Landmark Education – Part Three and how my vibration went from 35 to 175 in a 15-minute exercise

I left it off that I hardly understood any of the three-day course, and yet…

Since then I have distinguished (don’t forget, this was 27 years ago!) that mind-learning, understanding, actually stands in the way of transformation. Transformation happens as a result of an insight, but the mind is only capable of intellectual insights, and they are worthless, or better said: a dime a dozen. Almost worthless, lol.

So here we are, midday day 3 of the Communication Workshop. The sun is blasting, it is late August in Israel. We are asked to stand up and mingle. I look out the window. The room is on the top of a mountain that is surrounded on three sides with the beautiful blue water of the Mediterranean. Breathtaking.

We are asked to find a new partner to share with. My new partner is gorgeous. He is of Yemenite origin, a Yemenite Jew. Tall, wild looking, lean and sexy. We are asked to make a list of all the people we have a bad or so-so relationship with. My mom is on the top of my list, of course.

Then the leader, a fellow architect, asks us to cross out number one and number two from our list. I gasp. My father is number three… eggad… this is going to be bad.

The assignment is to say one sentence that would completely alter that relationship. One sentence? That is going to be tough.

Landmark Education: worth watching video and my story – Part One

I was first introduced to Landmark it was called something else, Werner Erhard and Associates. I was a new immigrant in Israel, worked for the City of Jerusalem as an architect, in the Town Planning Department. I was lonely and miserable.

I left Hungary hoping for a family. I left Hungary hoping for a better life. Instead I brought my misery with me and got loneliness on top of it.

One day a woman I barely knew by sight stuck her head in the door of my office and invited us, 4 girls, to a thing at her home. I said yes, I would have gone anywhere at that point.

My Hebrew was good enough to work, not too good to converse at that point.
